I am a pharmacist who is currently doing a post-graduate year 1 residency program who loves technology and pharmacy. I wanted to combine the two together in order to potentially save lives, and in the process, money as well. I learned to code a few months ago, and for my major project I decided to create an application for Emergency Department physicians to use that is specific for our institution to help them choose the correct empiric antimicrobial agents.
I know that it is a very niche application, but if it can help save lives, its worth a shot. Empiric guidelines were developed in conjunction with our Emergency Department pharmacist, Infectious Disease physicians, and institution specific bacterial information (sensitivity percentages, what organisms certain antibiotics cover, etc). These guidelines were then translated into this mobile application. Disease states include pneumonia, line-associated, intra-abdominal, central nervous system, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections. Each disease state has first line therapy, second line therapy, allergy alternatives, and comments.
